Walker's Store

Walker Store
Walker's Store
Milton, Nova Scotia

The store as shown here was rebuilt in 1931. The previous
store had been lost in 1931,
when an horrific fire swept through the village destroying many buildings.

The business was founded in 1928 by partners Pearl and Inez Walker, the wives of John Walker and his brother Russell Walker, who operated the nearby factory of Walker Bros.  Its original purpose was as an Ice Cream Store, but this evolved into groceries and other merchandise.

After the 1931 fire, re-building was accomplished in 16 days by carpenter William Murley and his helpers.  The new store was stocked with goods salvaged from the original store.  Walker's became a very popular general store over the years.

Some years later Pearl bought out Inez’s interest, to allow her sister-in-law to retire. Pearl continued as sole owner  until her death in 1965, when the business was closed forever.

The building served several purposes in the time following. One was to provide a place for teen-agers for meetings and partying. This proved to be difficult to keep alive, and the clergy that originally promoted the project, were forced to close it due to lack of funds and support.

Roger Leslie, proprietor of the Market next door then purchased the building for storage. Later it became the property of Philip Decker who uses the building for storage of used furniture.
