Moore French AGNEW... 1817-1872.. Early Dental Technician. He originally lived in Yarmouth,NS. In Liverpool, NS, he marr. a daughter of Caleb Seely. Mr. Agnew was an accepted expert on the art of making false teeth. He advertised that he had the most modern mechanical equipment to produce artificial teeth. He also advertised jewelery, and kept an establishment in the Seeely Building in Liverpool. Burial was in the Anglican Cemetery in Liverpool, NS.

Ambrose V ALLEN...xxxx-1893..Sail Maker.Cap't A.V.Allen of the Barg't L.M.Smith died of Brain Fever in South America. He was formerly of Lockport, NS., and was in buisness several times , once as a partner of Allen & Putnam, dissolved 1858, and the second time as a sail loft on Market St., Liverpool, with Allen and Cobb, dissolved 1865. He was marr. twice, (1), Mary Brien (1833-1861) dau. of Capt. John Brien of Bristol, Liverpool, NS. (2), 1863 with Jane Gelhert, dau. of Leonard Geldhert of Halifax, NS.

Samuel James MacIntosh ALLEN...1829-1868.Newspaper Publisher. He was son of George and Sarah (England) Allen,b.in Eastport Maine.He appears to have received his training as a journalist in Yarmouth NS where Alexande Lawson was the Publisher. He was publisher and editor in chief to Liverpool's newspaper "The Transcript".  This operated for some years and was the training place for many local historians, such as Long. He also was publisher of another publication, the "Milton Leader", July 14, 1859. In Yarmouth he had married Alice Cain in 1855, she died in Liverpool in 1868. He had sold out the Transcript in 1867 and after his wife's death moved to Halifax, NS. The next year he and his son Allister Allen took passage on a lumber laden vessel belonging to his brother, and sailing from Newcastle, NB.. The ship was never heard of again, presumed floundering at sea.

William ANDERSON..1830-1888..He was born in Belfast Ireland. Buried in Liverpool Bapt. Cem.

Charles H. ANDREWS..1809-1889...Cap't of Packets "Liverpool" & "Rival".He was born in Windsor, NS., and after marrying his brother's widow and moving to the area along Main St in Liverpool, near the steamship wharf, sailed for 25 years as Cap't of the Packets "Liverpool",and "Rival". He Marr. Catherine A.,(1803-1879) his brother (John)'s widow, who was the operator of a public school for the years 1825 to 1875.  Her students were usually small children of the town.

Dean ANNIS..1810-1890.. He was the son of James and Lydia (Holmes) Annis. He was marr. twice. (1)..Susan Gardner..(2) Caroline Holland (1854-1933) who died at age 79 yrs at the Country Home in Middlefield, Queens Co., NS. Previously she lived in Sandy Cove, Brooklyn, Queens Co., NS. Burial in Liverpool Baptist Cem.

James ANNIS..1834-1911.. He was a carpenter in Liverpool, and his death occured suddenly on the job, apoplexy,age 77. His wife, Mary Jane, (1835-1912) was originally from Cape Sable Island, Shelburn Co., NS. He also is buried in the Liverpool Bapt Cem.

Joseph BARSS..1776-18xx..Commander of the Privateer "Liverpool Packet"..He was son of Joseph(1745-1821) and Elizabeth (Crowell) (1755-1834) Barss. He married Olivia, daughter of Elisha and Margaret (Ratchford) DeWolfe of Liverpool, NS. Their family was: John William, Elisha, Eliza Ann, Amelia, twins James and Joseph, Thomas, Mary, and Simon. Cap't Jos. Barss and his small (53 ft. long) very fast vessel, with 40 local volunteer crew, became a very successful privateer on the American Coast in 1812 and 1813. She was eventually captured by the Americans and sold. He was warned away from the sea. His previous success made him wealthy, he bought a farm in Kentville, NS, he is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery there.

William BARTLETT...xxxx-1828..Hotel owner and Tavern Keeper.His was a series of hotel or taverns that operated at various times near Fort Point. He was originally of a family from New London, Conn. He was the son of Uriah and Louise Bartlett. He married in 1790 Sarah (Lewin), the widow of Robert Dolliver, she died in 1813. He marr. second Elizabeth, she married Ichabod Darrow after his death, and she died in 1841. William had at least one son, Joseph, who married Betsy Roberts. The first Tavern in town had been operated by John and Sarah Lewin of New London. Another daughter of John and Sarah was married to Fadey Phillips, who also became a tavern keeper. Lewin's fish lot was #12-Letter A. (Long's Hist of L'pool).

James C. BARTLING..1819-1906.. Trader, Ship Owner, and Merchant. He was the son of James Christian and Mary (Irwin) Bartling. He marr. Elizabeth McLearn (1821-1905) and they had five children. James was a sea captain and a merchant. He commanded the "Dispatch" and the "Unaso", both ships being used in the West Indies and the freighting trade.

Arod BEALS..1824-1896..Butcher. He came here from Annapolis County,and marr. Margaret Sheriffs, dau. of Magistrate John Sheriffs. Mr Beals operated a slaughter house and a meat shop on Market St. in Liverpool, NS.

Charles BILL..1814-1888..Manufacturer of Edged Tools, Trader, Ship Owner, and Merchant. Charles was the son of John Mayhew and Sarah (DeWolf) Bill of Cornwallis Twsp, NS. He married Amelia, daughter of Fadey Phillips and they had a son Silas T.R.Bill (1842-1890) who was a federal member for Queens in Ottawa. He was a blacksmith,and early in partnershio with Skerry making "Edged Tools". He, although marr. into the Phillips Tavern family, was always a strong supporter of the Abstinence Society, and later the Temperance movement and the Baptist church. He was a deacon when the two groups separated and formed the Milton and Liverpool branches of the Baptist group locally. Another of his partnership deals was with the Phillips, as Phillips and Bill, and later an association known as Anderson and Bill where they owned vessels in the foreign trade. Locally the "Bill" name was known in Lockport and Shelburne. the American ancestors came to New London, Conn.

George BOEHNER..1828-1906..Building Contractor, Ship Builder, and Lumber Manufacturer. He originated in Lunenburg Co but started his building trade here in liverpool, NS. He marr. Lavinia Drew in 1851. He became a successful contractor, and builder in shipbuilding, houses, public buildings and several churches. He moved back to Lunenburg Co., and built a wood-working factory in Bridgewater and continued as a shipbuilder and contractor. Several of his projects in the Liverpool area are the Court House, and the Milton Christian Church.

David BURNABY..1829-.... General Merchant. David was the son of William and Sarah (Leslie)(McLearn) Burnaby. He marr. in 1863 Margaret McPherson and had one dau. Anne(b.1866). His father had established a business which he continued with on Main St. It was a general store, groceries, hardware, dry goods, feed and flour. It was located on the South side of Main St., just east of School St., and can be seen in old photos around the town.

Joseph BURNABY..1794-1872...Privateer Captain, Fisherman, and Trader. He was the son of Thomas and Bethyah (Harrington) Burnaby. He marr. 1815 (1) Mary Millard and they had 2 sons and four sons. He marr. 1827 (2) Mrs Dorcas (Smith) Clint. She was the dau. of John and Dorcas (Smith) Foster and the widow of James Clint. Joseph Burnaby was a fisherman, a trader, and a privateersman. He was in command of the "Liverpool Packet", a privateer ship during the war off 1812-1814.

Colin CAMPBELL..1826-1905.. He was a son of John(1797) and Sarah (Freeman) Campbell. He marr. Lydia Mills....-1896, dau. of Rev. John and Mary Ratchford (Barss) Mills. They had four children.

John CAMPBELL..1797-1873..Born in Shelburn, son of Colin(1757) and Elizabeth (Hardy) Campbell. He marr. 1821, Sarah'Sally' Teresa Freeman 1803-1867, dau. of Thomas(1775-1842)and Sarah (Hopkins)(1781-1856). John and Sally had ten children.

Thomas F. CAMPBELL..1824-1890..He was a son of John and Sarah (Freeman) Campbell. He was marr. three times. (1).1850 to Katherine Eleanor Snow, 1827-1854, dau of Joshua Snow of Lockport. She had four children. (2). 1858 to Margaret Geldert, dau. of Leonard Geldert of Windsor, NS.  this wife had three children. (3). 1863 in Halifax, Eliza Thompson, dau. of James Thompson. No Children.

Benjamin CHESLEY.. 1811-1889..Veterinary Surgeon, Mail Carrier. He was born in Wilmot, Annapolis County, NS, and a brother Nelson located in New Germany, NS. Ben'j had married Elizabeth,(1822-1888), dau of Seth Leonard of Paradise, Anna. Co., NS.  Before coming to Queens Co., Ben'j had been deputy Sheriff of Anna. Co. for 8 years. He moved his family to Liverpool in 1853 from Wilmot and was the mail carrier from Liverpool to Port Medway, both points in Queens Co., NS. This was fifty years before the railroad came to the south shore.  He was also a Veterinary Surgeon. Chesley's Corner in Liverpool is where High.#8 intersects High.#3, his home was on the S-W corner.

Joseph COLLINS..1714-1771.. He was the father of several of the Collins clan who came from Chatham, New England. He had marr. Abigail Crowell(1715-1789), dau of Paul Crowell in New England. They were early proprietors of Liverpool Twsp, NS. Their sons were Benajah(d.1788), Stephen, Hallet, Peter, and Paul; daughters were Ruth and Abigail(d.1799) (More says father of Hallet was Cyrenus Collinsb. on Cape Cod 26 Jun 1735)

Stephen COLLINS Jr...Cap't 1805-1864... He was the son of Stephen Sr. (1774-1866) and Sarah (1783-1852) Collins. He was marr. to Elizabeth McLearn 1806-1848.

Stephen COLLINS Sr....1774-1866.. He was a prosperous merchant in Liverpool, NS. Included in his children were James, Stephen Jr., and Mrs Wm. Dean

Hallet COLLINS..1749-1831..He was the son of Joseph and Abigail (Crowell) Collins, early proprioters of Liverpool Twsp, NS. He was marr. three times. His first marr.,in 1771 was to Rhoda Peek,  the dau. of Daniel and Rhoda Peek,and she died at age 36 in 1788. children by this marr. were Phebe 1780-83, Martha 1782-83, Phebe 1784-89, Enos b. sep 5 1774.,Rhoda b.Feb 13 1776, Lucy b.Mar 22 1777, Sarah b.dec 31 1778,Hannah b.mar 1 1780, Betsy b. Nov 21 1785, Samuel b. July 2 1787, Hallet Jr. b. Oct 7, 1788.

John E. COLLINS...1841-1870.. He was the son of Stephen Jr. and Elizabeth (McLearn) Collins. He had been married to a dau of Jabez Freeman.

Cap't Paul COLLINS..1753-1840.. He had been born in New England, one of several sons of Joseph and Abigail (Crowell)Collins who all came to Liverpool Township and created wealth from trading, shipping, and privateering. They were mostly merchants in their senior years, and much wealth resulted. His dau.Mary age 22 died in 1811. His wife Hannah d.1830 age 66. Their son John d. 1801 age 19.Their son William d. 1810. Collins built his home near Bridge Street on Main St. in Liverpool.

Francis W. COLLINS.. 1811-1890..was the son of Hallet Collins. He marr. in 1841 Amelia Catherine, dau. of James R. DeWolfe. After yhe death of his first wife he marr. a dau. of Hon. R.M.Cutler, of Guysboro. He was a shareholder of 25 shares in the short lived Bank of Acadia in 1872/73.

Alexander COWIE..1826-1914..He was the son of Andrew and Janet (More) Cowie, was a partner in the firm A. Cowie and Paul Sons. That firm had been early in a Tannery, located where the drinking water well is in Liverpool today. This firm was later involved  in lumbering and shipbuilding as well as being ship owners with ships at sea. He marr.in 1853, Elizabeth DeWolf Spurr(1834-1906) and had several children who reached maturity, Canon F. Cowie, Dr Wm. Cowie in New Jersey; Alexander died at his dau. Mrs. S.F.Freeman, in New York City. He was Liverpool's Postmaster for many years and had recently retired.

Andrew COWIE, Sr..1798-1890..Ship Owner and Tanner. He was an immigrant from Banffshire,Scotland, and marr. Janet More(1800-1891)in Liverpool in 1820. the marr. was performed by Rev. John Thomas. An early Tannery had been established by John More in 1810, it became Perkins and More in 1814, and abandoned during that 1812-14 war. It was re-established in 1821 by Cowie and More, Cowie now the son-in-law of John More. More retired in 1832, a new firm of A.Cowie and Sons was established which did business for another fifty years until those disastrous bank failures which ruined all local businesses. Many Cowie descendants exist today, most moved to the west or USA. Childen were:Elizabeth, William, Alexander,Martha, Mary, Andrew James, Arthur(1838-1891), and John Edward who d/y. Andrew lived near Wolf St. on Main St., and the Tannery was on the brook and dam that was located where today, 1997, are the wells for drinking water for public use.

Alexander COWIE.. xxxx-1914.. Postmaster, Town/Liverpool,1880-1906.  He was the son of Andrew Sr. and Janet (More) Cowie. He marr. in 1853 Elizabeth DeWolfe Spurr (1834-1906). Their children were: Alexander d/y, William d/y, Charles d/y, Andrew (jr)1853, James (Rev.,D.D.), Clara, Alexander, Arthur 1892 (Omaha), Catherine Susan, and Margaret.

James Ratchford DeWOLF...1787-1855..He was a trader,an early merchant, privateer, ship owner,magistrate and town father. He served early as a member of Nova Scotia's Assembly. He was son of Judge Elisha and Margaret (Ratchford) DeWolf of Cornwallis Township.   He marr. Elizabeth M Freeman in 1810, daughter of Liverpool Proprioter Joseph and Margaret Freeman and made Liverpool his home. They had children: Margaret,1811, marr. Spurr: Ann F.,1813, m.1.Van Buskirk,m.2.Rev. Snyder: Hannah,1815, m. Moore: Joseph F.,1817,d/y: Amelia, 1826, m.Francis Collins. An early palatial home was built on the south east corner of Main and School Streets. This home was later owned by Rev.Harris, then sold to Cap't Hill and became a hotel near the Steamship wharf.

Dr.Henry Gregg FARISH...M.D.1825-1914..He was the son of Dr. H.G.Farrish of Yarmouth, NS. Henry was educated in Edinburg and Paris, practised first in Shelburne,NS, then came to Liverpool in 1850, where he practised for 60 years. His home exists in 1997, on Main St., opposite the old Mersey Hotel. He married the daughter of the Hon. R.M.Cutler of Guysboro, NS. Her name was Frances, they had children. He left a map of Liverpool, NS, on which he had written the location and names of those living there in the mid 1800's, which is a valuable historical document, a copy of which hangs on the wall in the T.H.Raddall Research center. His grave is located in the Anglican Cem.; record of it is in the Tim MacDonald Records there.

John Headley FREEMAN.. 1801-1878.. His ancestry is through 1760 Proprieter Elisha, father, and son Elisha. He was a son of Elkanah and Ruth (Headley) Freeman. He marr, 1835, Charlotte dau. of Capt. A.V.S.Forbes, who was Customs Collector at Yarmouth, NS. They had eight children.

Jabez FREEMAN..1813-1889.. His ancestry is down through Elisha, his son Simeon, etc. Jabez was son of Elisha(1786) and Marie (Covill) Freeman. He marr. in 1842 Hannah dau. of James and Phebe (Freeman) Morton. They had five children.

Joshua Newton FREEMAN..1816-1912..He was son of Robert,1780, and Gertrude (Heckman)(1788) Freeman. He marr. (1) Sarah Campell, 1924- 1848, one child, (2) He marr.in 1852 Elizabeth Moody of Yarmouth, NS,and she died in 1854 in Australia. His third(3) marr. was to the widow of Rev. John Mills, she was Mary Barss dau. of Capt. Joseph Barss and Olivia (DeWolfe) Barss. They had five children.

Joseph FREEMAN..1814-1891..[ancestry, immigrant ancester was Samuel(1) Freeman, Joseph(2),Samuel(3)]. Samuel(3)(1772-1841)and Susanna (Jones)(1779-1847) Freeman were parents of this Joseph. He marr. Susan Godfrey, dau. of Capt. James Godfrey. This group of the Freeman family were the ones best known for their seafaring and privateering life. Joseph's grandfather Joseph(2) was the Col. Joseph who was also the originator of the store and group who lived near Fort Point on Main St.

Nathaniel FREEMAN..1824-1904..His family were of the Rochester, Mass. Freemans, Elisha's family who were also seafarers and mainly lumbermen and sawmill owners. The original Nathaniel was also an early treasurer of the early township.Son of Nathaniel and Lucy(Freeman) Freeman.He marr. in 1852 Eliza Pope,(1822-1882) and they had six children. He was Registrar of Deeds in Queens Co., for 43 years.

Thomas FREEMAN, Cap't...1798-1865... He was the son of Cap't Sam'l and Elizabeth (Park) Freeman. He was another descendant of the Joseph Freeman line of seafaring and privateering family of Freemans, who located their homes in the Fort Point area of Liverpool. He married Mary Knowles, also of the Fort Point area, and they had nine children. His work took them to Paradise in Annapolis Co., NS where some children married and descendants still exist.

Dr. James F. FORBES, M.D. and M.P.. He was son of Capt. A.V.S. Forbes, Customs Collector of Yarmouth, NS. He held 20 shares of the ill fated Bank Of Acadia in 1872/73.

James T. HILL.. xxxx-1867..He was an officer with the Cunard Line of Ships, and when steamships first provided coastal transportation to Liverpool, he bought the old J.R.DeWolf property and converted it into a hotel to accomadate 50 guests. It was near the then steamship wharf, at the foot of School street. Another local property with color, he owned also, was the picnic grounds of Pine Grove Park which was called Hills Grove for years. Hill's Hotel was later sold to Hervey the almost railroad magnate, but he went into receivership. John Seldon bought the property and tore down the hotel, and built the magnificent house later the home of Col Jones, Pres. of Mersey Paper.

Edward Whitman KEMPTON..1834-1913.. He was the son of Thomas and Delilah (Freeman) Kempton. Thomas had been born in Milton, went early to the Northern District of Queens Co., NS, and Delilah was marr. to him at Pleasant River.Edward was born in Kempt, NS, but had moved into Milton before his marr. in 1877 to Mary Martha Davis (!855-1942)

Cornelius KNOWLES...1782-1844..He was the son of Cap't. James and Elizabeth (Burbank) Knowles. He was grandson of the 1750 Township of Liverpool proprioter Cornelius Knowles, who was the first treasurer of Liverpool, and built his home at or near Fort Point. His house was reputed to have been rebuilt and is well known today as the original Dexters Tavern. An Island above the bridge is called Knowles Island. This family is well documented at the Thomas Raddall Research Center.

J. Snow MacDONALD..1831-1908.. Snow MacDonald was organist of the Anglican Church for many years. He had married Maria Campbell, 1831-1909, daughter of Hon. John Campbell.

Alexander McLAUGHLAN.. Alex. was the son of Alexander and Mary (b.1780) (McLeod) Mclaughlan of Shelburne,NS. The senior Alex. had been discharged as a Highland soldier in 1783. Alexander was a shipbuilder, in Liverpool, NS, he was the Master builder of such ships as Albadore(1860), T.R.Pattillo(1860), Kate Freeman (1864), and many more. Their children were John, Charles, Alonzo, Selina, and others.

John McLAUGHLAN..John was the son of the younger Alex. above, and marr. in 1864, Susan Bushen, and they had one son Charles. It was 1878 that this family moved to Lowell, Mass.

Allen McPHERSON..Allen Mcpherson was the son of Allen and Hannah McPherson of Port Mouton. He marr. in 1832 Rebecca Jane. their children were: Margaret, Hannah, Elizabeth, Susan, Maria, William, Robert, and Mary.. He had a shoe-shop on Snow P. Freeman's wharf, later in 1854 he was a barber, and in 1860 his wife was operating a boarding house on Wentworth St.

James McPHERSON, Sr..1791-1881.. He was the son of Laughlon MacPherson and Elizabeth (Urquart) MacPherson from Scotland, Shelburne, NS., and also Jordan Falls, NS. Another brother Donald had taken up farming in Brookfield, North Queens. James marr. (1)..Elizabeth Randall and they had three children, Elizabeth,d/y, Mary Ann, also d/y, and John McPherson, "the Bard of Acadia". (see James More's history of Queens County). James marr (2) Mary West in 1828, and the two children were Hannah and James, Jr. He marr. (3) Rebecca Cole (1790-1876). This union had no children.

James McPHERSON, Jr... 1831- 1910.. James Jr. was the son of James Sr. and Mary (West) McPherson. He marr. Mary Baxter, dau. of Wm. Baxter who was formerly from Aberdeen, Scotland. They had one daig. Helen.

John Thomas NICKERSON...1834-xxxx.. He was the son of Warren Nickerson, and grandson to the ship builder....Gardner. His second marr. was to the widow of Capt. Wm. Freeman,d.1878. She was originally Lois Hursey,b.1844, d.1928. She had two sons when she marr. John T., Fred Freeman and William Freeman.John T. had three sons, John, Law, and Allie when he marr. Lois. they together had a further son, Lan Nickerson. John T. was a calker by trade in the ship building days, and as an old man ran a general store on Chesley's Corner, and owned most of the property around. His own home was where MacDonald's is today. His store property is now used by the latest (1996) Irving Service center. He also owned property he called "Blue Mountain" for his wood lot, believed to be on Great Hill, near Nickerson's Pond.

Thomas REES... Marr. Mary Ellen....had a son Thomas Rees ..1843-1883.

Thomas R. PATTILLO..1800-1874...He was a son of Alexander Pattillo, of Aberdeen Scotland,and his wife Elizabeth (Roberts), widow of Joseph Bartlett. Eliz. was dau. of Robert Roberts. Alexander had settled in Chester, Lunenburg Co., NS. where his family was born.T.R.Pattillo married Mercy Ann Burnaby(1802-1846) dau. of Capt. Thomas Burnaby of Liverpool. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters. T.R.Pattillo was a sea captain, a merchant, a ship owner, and a ship builder. Several of his ships were the packet "rival", and the T.R.Pattillo. The Bank of Acadia was started by others, he was persuaded to become president and invested 250 shares of his own, and was badly injured (by losing a fortune)when it failed, dying the next year.

Thomas Roberts PATTILLO..1833-1910..He was a son of Thomas R. and Mercy Ann (Burnaby) Pattillo. He marr. Mary Jane Starr dau. of Col. Richard Starr, of Cornwallis, Kings Co., NS. His education was at Acadia College (both the prep school, Horton acad. and the University). He was an educator, was principal of Liverpool Academy, later inspector of schools for Queens/Lunenburg, for which he moved to Lunenburg. He died in Halifax, NS. He was the author of "Moose Hunting and Salmon Fishing in Canada".

James Frederick SKERRY...1830-1866..He came to Liverpool from Paradise(probably) in Annapolis Co., NS and it was 1854 when he marr. Susan E.Starratt, dau. of William Starrat himself originally fro Paradise, NS. They had children: Charles, Eva, Ella, Alice, Annie, William, and Arthur. He was an expert in iron and steel, and soon joined up with another blacksmith  Charles Bill and they manufactured Edged-Tools, such as axes in many forms and other tools like chisels for example. Their establishment was out on the White Point Road, near Winters and Harry McDonalds. Their product was judged in expositios of the period and received awards. Skerry died at age 36, in the early part of his life. His son Rev. Wm. Skerry was a minister in Mass, USA.

Hon. Henry William SMITH...1826-1890..was the second son of James Roger Smith, Q.C. He was born in St. Kitts, West Indies. After being admitted to the bar in 1849, he resided in Shelburne,NS, moving to Liverpool, NS in 1857. He had married a daughter of Colonel Poyiltz in 1852. They had several sons and one daughter. He was very much involved with politics at the time of Confederation, and was a supporter of the Anti-Confederates. He was elected to the provincial legislature at the same time as Samuel Freeman of Milton, NS. He was a delegate with Joseph Howe in the group who went to London to obtain a repeal of Nova Scotia from the recent confederation. That was unsuccessful. He was appointed Attorney General for Nova Scotia in 1871, and in 1885 was appointed to the Bench of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.

Jabish SNOW..1800-1880.. He was son of Jabez Snow of Shelburn, and direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins, Mayflower Passenger, and Snow families of the early Plymouth, Mass. colony. He marr. Jane Henderson..1901-1897.. she having been born in Ireland. His father having been persuaded to take the presidency of the ill-fated Bank of Acadia, caused him the son to invest in 62 shares.
