THOMAS BURNABY......1837-1896. Son of Job (1798-1888) and Parna (Freeman) Burnaby. His mothers family had made land available for the Burnaby homestead on Beaverdam Lane,(now Glenwood St in 1996).. Thomas marr. Experience Freeman in 1857, they had one son Edward. In earlier years Thomas and Lad Burnaby, his brother, had been partners in logging at Burnaby Lake,(located in Queens Co. between the Mersey and Medway rivers). They shipped their rough export lumber from Port Medway. Later years saw him in the"Annapolis Valley", he died in Wolfville, NS.

LODOWICK BURNABY......1838-1895 . Son of Job and Parna (Freeman) Burnaby, one of the lumbering family who lived on Glenwood  St. (Beaverdam Lane).  This family evolved from privateering families, which developed large areas of timberland, i.e. Burnaby Lake, and had sawmills and retail outlets in this area. The Burnaby's later bought John Minard's Mill on Potanoc dam, and also operated a general store called the Klondike Store. Usually referred to as "Lad" Burnaby, his family consisted of ten children, all are written up in a study of the Burnaby/Barnaby families of Nova Scotia.  Author of the book-study was Harding Burnaby of Toronto, grandson of "Lad" Burnaby..Copies of this book are at the Queens Co. Museum, Liverpool, and the Public Archives of Nova Scotia.

ROBERT BURNABY......(1843-1905).. Brother to Lodowick and Thomas above. Married to Harriet Minard, daughter of William S. and Eleanor (Gardner) Minard.  Robert and Harriet were much involved with the Milton Christian Church.  Their home was on the corner of Glenwood St., and Highway # 8.  Recently (1996) this house was purchased by the Bordens, from the estate of Fraser Brown, son of Ansel Brown.  A large photograph of Harriet and her four sisters is in possession of a niece of Mrs Burnaby, Mrs Evelyn (Leslie) Locke of Brooklyn, N.S., that picture having been taken in front of the same house. Mrs LilaManthorne also has a copy of this picture of the five sisters in front of the house.

LEWIS  BROWN.....(1837-1870).It appears that he died before 1881,he had married Annie Jayne, and she was remarrying.  The family bible is thought to be in the family of Fred or Frank Ellis, who have Brown ancestry. It was given to Miss Barbara Ellis when Mrs Jessie (Brown) Miles and her husband Elmer went to Senior Citizen care in their older years. One of the names in that bible was Lewis Brown.

JOSIAH  BROWN  SR.......

SIMEON  F. BROWN......1811-1898.. He married in 1834 Elizabeth Harlow (    -1878), and included in their eight children were  three sons: Malachi (Mack) Brown ; Richard Brown (1843-    ) ; Jacob Brown, who married in Chester, NS. and five daughters.

Simeon was the son of Jacob and Hannah Atkins (Freeman) Brown. Jacob Brown (Simeon's father) was often referred to in Perkins Journal, and whose home is now owned (1996) by John and Elsie Dauphinee, #239 High. 8.  Mack Brown eventually became the owner of this house, Richard Brown had a home on Milford St, #121, now owned by the Grant family.

EDWIN  BROWN......

EBENEZER  BROWN.....1800-1880..Eben was the son of Joseph (1770-   ) and Elizabeth (Dunlop) Brown. He married (1) Ruth Gardner in 1827 (John Payzant's marriages), and their children were Eben (1829-1847), Ann (b.1837) ( m. Hardy), Trypena (b.1838), Lucinda (b 1835) (m Hardy), Stephen(b.1843) , and another unnamed son who died of a gunshot wound at the Screecher (Lake Rossignol).     He married (2) in 1850, Jane Smith (1817-1888) of Hemford, North Lunenburg Co., NS., on the Liverpool- Nictaux Highway. Two more children were born, Augusta (1857-1916) Brown who married Freeman Payzant of Lockport, NS, and William Ebenezer (1865-1942) Brown who marr. Margaret Ryan(1866-1912).   The senior Eben Brown (b-1800) and his family lived at the"Clears" near Herring Cove Lake, (up Milford St. in Milton, NS), and he was a part owner of a sawmill nearby. He was also a cooper by trade. His youngest son Eben (1865) Brown, eventually bought the Burnaby House on the corner of Glenwood St., and High. # 8 in Milton, NS. This house has recently been purchased from the estate of Fraser Brown, a great grand-son, and now is in 1996 the property of the Bordens.

JOSEPH  BROWN......1827-1907.. He was the son of Joseph(1798-1861) and Sarah(Morton) Brown. He married in 1854 Lucy Ellis (1826-1893). They lived on Moose Hill and had one son, Ellis Richard Brown and five daughters. One daughter, Millie married Franklyn Minard, and lived at  #508 West St.,Milton, NS.

JAMES  BEZANSON......1819-----  ..He married Susan Miles in 1845. She was the daughter of Robert Miles. They had fourteen children, many went away to USA.

THOMAS  COOP......1821-1881.  The Coop family all qualify for "Mayflower Desc.", and U.E.L. Status, because of their several ancestors. This family came to Port Mouton with Carletons Guysborough Township.  Simeon Perkin's Diary has many reference to the ancestor, John Sr., who was a sawyer and mill man at Perkins mill at "The Falls".  No.121, Highway # 8, in 1996 is supposed to be the house built by John Coop, and the river bank here was the start of a series of wharves where foreign merchandise was landed and traded, and the Coop store was also located there. Later several sons of John built other homes on this stretch of new road along the river bank.  Thomas Coop marr. Margaret Jane Leslie (1827-1876) in 1848.

JABEZ  COOP......1828-1899. Jabez also marr. a Leslie bride from Port Mouton, NS. in 1858.  The Coop's boys, like their father  were lumbermen,and merchants. The area around Herring Cove Lake was heavily logged by this family, with sawmills at the lake outlet and later in Brooklyn, NS., near the mouth of Herring Cove Brook.

JOHN  COOP, Jr......1825- 1899.  John married Hannah Murray in 1856. He was involved with the family woodland and sawmilling operations.

JAMES  W. COOP......1787----- . James was married in 1809 to Hannah Nickerson, he was a son of the first John, Perkins sawyer, and built his home at 199 Milford St., in Milton, NS.  That house also is standing in 1996, owners are Tony and Wendy Hatt.

ALBERT CHURCHILL......1816-1901.. Came from away, some say Maine,to be one of the early lumbermen involved with finishing lumber, rather than shipping it as a rough product for others to do work on. The Mersey River valley was enjoying good times, had an active shipbuilding industry, as well as beginning to manufacture doors, windows, and finish lumber products.  He married a daughter, Mercy, of Zoeth Freeman, a lumberman also. Albert built the house now in 1996 occupied and owned by Peter and Elsie Zwicker, on Forest St. and raised a considerable family there. Churchill and Wyman first had a factory near Milton's Swimming Pool, and Sports field, later he built another factory near the East end of Potanoc Bridge.

JOSEPH  H.  COOK......1828- 1921.  He married as his second wife, Sophia Freeman, daughter of Samuel and Mercy (Knowles) Freeman in 1853 and built his home on Milton corner. This home was ordered destroyed by Irving Oil about 1980 or so. It was directly across the street from the cannon buried on the corner by the Masonic Hall. Jos. Cook was a lumberman, and a sawyer and millman at the nearby sawmills . His wife was a sister to the mother of Marshall Saunders. Her father was the Samuel Freeman who owned a shipyard in Pine Grove Park. Their son Charles Cook married a daughter of Albert Churchill.
 

JAMES  COLE  SR.......He was the son of Israel Cole, and one of Israel's four wives, and families. Israel himself was a son of Benjamin Cole and they are thought to have built the house still standing, in good condition, owned by Mrs Charles Legge in 1996, 248 Highway # 8, in Milton, NS.

JAMES  COLE  JR......1838-1895... He was a son of James Cole Sr.  He married Isabella Holmes in 1839. We expect he may have bought the house at #267 High. #8, a home later occupied by his son Horace Cole, who ran a horse livery and trucking business from that address.

HOUSTON  COLE......1829-----. Married Olivia Freeman. He was theson of Israel and Hannah (Morton) Cole.

BENJAMIN  COLE......1825-----. Married first to Hannah Kenney who died at age nineteen. His second wife was Lutitia Hardy.

EBENEZER  COOMBS (second by that name).....was the son of Ebenezer (1st) and Maria (Mullins) Coombs.  He married Eliza Smith, who was a daughter of Jonathan and Bethia (Mullins) Smith.  Note that Maria Mullins and Bethia Mullins were sisters, daughters of William Mullins who drowned in Liverpool Harbour in 1817. Their mother Maria (Parks ) Mullins died a month after her husbands death. Another sister Hannah married James Walker in St.Margaret's Bay, NS,and because of being ward children those sisters met only in their senioryears.  Ebenezer was father of Frederick, grandfather of Lawrence, Bruce, Currie, Gerald, and others.

SEWARD  COOMBS......1830-----.. Seward was also son of  Ebenezer(1st) and Maria (Mullins) Coombs. He married Margaret Godfrey in 1860. He was awoodsman. His two sons, Seward and James Coombs were well known inconstruction work, they were very strong, placing big timbers indifficult positions was their specialty. Seward was a valuable source of local history and genealogy to T.B.Smith, who devoted many pages to these interviews with Seward.

JAMES  COLLIE......married in 1859 Matilda, daughter of Silvanus and Ezalia (Ford) Morton. James built his home, 240 Highway # 8, about this time and a family soon filled the home. He had started as a school teacher, but being involved with the enterprising Mortons, and a bursting economy, he was soon a merchant, and partner in shipbuilding enterprises. His wife and daughters were strong supporters and workers in the Milton Christian Church, he remained a strong supporter and helped build the Milton Congregational Church, and upon hisdeath the large funeral was conducted from the Cong. Church.

EBENEZER DEXTER......

FRANCIS ETHERINGTON......1830- 1916. He was the son of Thomas (1802-1892) and Abigail (Kempton) Etherington. He married Matilda Minard, daughter of W.S. and Eleanor (Gardner) (Macdonald) Minard. She was one of the five sisters in the photo in front of Robert Burnaby's house. The Etherington family had been U.E.L with the Shelburne Loyalists, an ancester had been harbour pilot.Francis was a cabinet maker, and highly skilled carpenter, did excellent hardwood work still shown locally in several locations, such as the Milton Christian Church. His home was # 12 Forest St., in Milton, which he had rebuilt from a drill hall, originally used to train others against the possibility of a Fenian Raid.

THOMAS ETHERINGTON.....1802-1892..  The father of Francis, married to Abigail daughter of Francis Kempton, was a lumberman, coming to Milton early. There were six boys and three girls in the family, and the boys especially were very long lived, like 90 to 100 years of age.  Thomas built a new home at 361 Highway #8, in Milton, NS. in 1854, the home is still standing in 1996.
 

NATHAN ELLIS......1819-1899... Nathan was U.E.L., from Chester,NS.,and married in 1843 Margaret, daughter of Robert and Lavernia (Coombs) Miles. They raised their family in Milton, on Milford St.  He was involved with lumbering in the Herring Cove District.

TRACEY FREEMAN......1805-----  He was the son of Dennis (1766-1846) and Mercy (Gorham) (1764-1846) Freeman, and he married in 1830 Permelia Gardner, and they had seven children.

BARNABUS FREEMAN......1801-1863. He had married his first wife, Charlotte Kempton in 1828, and moved to West Caledonia. There were no children when she died in 1851.  He married second Lucy Gardner, and moved back to his father's house,  264 High. # 8, Milton, and recently (1996) purchased by Stephen Oliver. This story is told in Harley Walker's book on Milton Houses.

SIMEON FREEMAN......1825-1901.. He was the son of Dennis Jr. (1795-1874) and Jemima (Freeman) (1800-1850) Freeman, and a nephew of Tracey above. He married Harriet Freeman who was a daughter of William and Lydia (Hager) Freeman. They had four children and died in Upton, Worcester Co., Mass.

EDWARD K. FREEMAN......1830- 1901. His first wife was another daughter of W.S.Minard, and Eleanor (Gardner) Minard, she died in 1879. He marr. second Abigail Freeman, and there were no children by either marriage.

GEORGE W. FREEMAN...1821-1861..  He was the son of Simeon and Hepzibah (Morton) Freeman, he married in 1849 Lydia Wright. They had four children.

WHITMAN FREEMAN......1792-1875.. He was son of Nelson and Mercy (Whitman) Freeman. He was married three times, (1) Azuba Dexter daughter of Isaac and Anna (Foster) Dexter and six children. (2) Ann Kempton, daughter of Francis and Abigail (Millard) Kempton, and six children. (3)  in 1852 Experience Freeman, daughter of Simeon and Hepzibah (Morton) Freeman, and two more children.

SAMUEL JR. FREEMAN...1824- 1902. He was son of Samuel (1795-1878)and Sophia (Ford) (1800-1827) Freeman. He married in 1849 Charlotte dau. of George and Catherine (Kempton) Freeman of Caledonia, North Queens Co., NS. This Samuel's sister Maria had married a Baptist Minister, Rev Saunders, and their daughter was Marshall Saunders, the well known authoress .

Samuel Sr., and Jr. had lived in the house now in 1996 identified as #384 Highway #8, in Milton, NS. Samuel Jr. had nine children, one marr. Gilbert Kempton, the photographer, another James Hunt, Contractor.  Samuel Jr., also known as Deacon, was a memberof the Liberal Party and represented Milton in the Legislature of NS, from 1867 to 1878. The family business was lumbering and shipbuilding, the shipyard is thought to have been in what today is Pine Grove Park.

WILLIAM H. FREEMAN......1812-1895. Wm.H. Freeman was the oldest son of the second marriage of Simeon Freeman, to Abigail (Freeman) Slocombe. Wm. H.married first Cecelia Hayes, (1814-1846) and all the children of that married moved away to other livelihoods. Wm. H. married second Louisa Cook,(in 1848). He had built about 1840 his home at #379 High. 8, in Milton. Wm. H.'s daugter Louisa married Edward Hendry, the ownership passed to Mrs Sadie Getson after the death of his widow by a second marriage, and now is owned in 1996 by Dale Muise.

JOSEPH BENT FREEMAN......1829-1888. He was the son of Simeon (1762-) and Lovefry (Parker) (Bent) Freeman, the only son by Simeon's third marriage.  Joseph B. married in 1856 Mary Eliza Dexter, daughter of Warren and Mary Eliza (Snow) Dexter. There were ten children. The home he built was a hotel at onetime, and is shown on old maps as the Victoria Hotel. It was located across from the 1996 location of the Shell Station 0f Hatt's, in Milton,and was torndown a few years ago.

EDWARD H. FREEMAN......1816- ----. He was an unmarried son of Simeon and (2nd wife) Abigail (Freeman) (Slocomb) Freeman. A sawmill shareholder and lumberman, he built the house at # 367 High. 8, now in 1996 owned by Mervyn and Sandra Oickle.

ALLAN T. FREEMAN......1826-1902..  Owner of the Upper Gang Mill at Milton Falls. He purchased later the home located at West St. and Oliver Lane in Milton, in 1996 owned by Allan Fownes. This is the mill purchased by John and Russ Walker in 1907, and became the woodworking factory of Walker Bros.

JOSEPH P. FREEMAN......1823-1892..He was a son of Simeon (1793-1841) and Hepzibah (Morton) (1796-1877) Freeman, who had eleven children. Joseph Payzant Freeman marr. about 1854 Mary Anna Ballou, ancestry unknown, born about 1824 and died in 1893 in Milton. He was a brother to James Morton Freeman, who built the house where Dick and Marguerite Cole live in 1996, 362 Highway # 8.

JAMES M. FREEMAN......His home was that now occupied by Richard and Marguerite Cole, # 362 Highway 8, in Milton. James Freeman was a lumberman, his wife was Mary Ann Kempton, also of a lumbering family.  This home was an early version of a Gothic house.

JAMES A. FREEMAN......1814-1881. James Augusta Freeman was the son of Simeon (1762-1847) and his second wife Abigail Freeman, widow of James Slocum. James F. marr. 1841 Olivia Kempton, daughter of John Winslow Kempton and Sarah(Snow) Kempton. This is the home bought and moved to West Green Harbour, in Shelburne Co., new owner Mrs Priest. Its original location was #389 High. 8. This story is told in Harley Walker's book on Milton Houses.

LEANDER STARR FORD......1835-1905.. Leander Starr Ford was a member of the Legislature of Nova Scotia as an M.P., and later was the Inspector of Fisheries for the Maritime Provinces. He was the son of Theodocius and Jane (McLeod) Ford, and was married to Mary Ellen Freeman daughter of Zoeth and Dorinda (Freeman) Freeman. Their home still exists in 1996, at 15 Forest St.,now the home of the late George Leaman. Dr. Starr Ford of Cincinatti, Ohio,and Dr. Thoed. Ford of Liverpool, NS, were sons of this couple. Leander was also a partner in a carriage manufacturing business in Milton with his brother Ad. Ford.  Their place of business still stands, as a second hand storage area for the Deckers, on the the river bank near the Sr. Citizensapartments (1996).

ELBRIDGE FORD......1838-1911.. Known as Rev. E.C.Ford, he was a preaching Elder, ordained from the Milton Christian Church in 1869. He preached for many years at Cornwallis Christian Church, in Port Williams, Kings Co., NS. He was son of Theodocius and Jane (McLeod) Ford, he was married to Annie Minard, one of the five daughters of W.S.Minard, and as shown in the photograph of Mrs Evelyn Leslie Locke.

ZOETH FREEMAN......1799-1878.. He was the son of Samuel(1770-1834) and Rebecca (Harlow) Freeman. Zoeth Freeman's holdings of timberland were considerable, and he was part owner of one of the Gang Mills at Milton Falls. The home he built, and in which eleven children were raised, still exists, #344 High. 8, and in 1996 occupied by George Wile. He had aquired his property from his uncle Zoeth, an original proprioter, who was sawyer at the earliest mill erected. Being childless the senior Zoeth had willed his holdings to nephew Zoeth. Three of the sons were medical Doctors, practising in Cincinatti in the 1860's. Several of the daughters built homes on land carved out of the original 12 acre lots #'s 3 & 4, in letter B.

JABEZ FREEMAN......1830-1910..Jabez was the only son of the Zoeth above to remain in Milton, and he was also a lumberman like his father. His home was that bought from his father, # 339 High. 8, which had been that of his great uncle Zoeth, who had been an original prop' in 1760, and was the youngest son of Elisha Freeman. He made improvements to the original home upon his marriage to Abigail Murray, sister to Rev. Howard Murray, a much loved minister of the Milton Christian Church. Ownership in sawmills was by shares of which he also was a shareholder.

REUBEN G. FREEMAN......1824-1903..He was a son of Elisha(1768-1842) and Marie (Coville) Freeman of Pleasant River, NS.  His wife, Elizabeth Brackett, was born 1825 in Augusta, Maine, they married in 1852 in Natick,Mass., they lived in Milton ,Nova Scotia,at least from 1855 to 1863, where their five children were born. Reuben and Marie both died in Minneapolis, Minn., and heirs of this family can be found today.

THEODOSIUS FORD......1811-1906. He was the son of William and Abigail (Murray)Ford. He was married twice. (1) He married  1833, Jane McLeod, and had six children. Jane died in 1847. He marr. (2)  Augusta Freeman,b.1820, m. 1848,and this marriage produced five more children. One of those children was John M.Ford, who marr. Maude Munro from Kempt, and lived in that fine old House where Mrs Zwicker's house now is a replacemrnt.(# 331 High #8).

ADANIRAM FORD......1838-1895..was a carriage maker in Milton, in partnership with his brother Leander, their shop being in a building still existing, Decker's Antiques storage on the river bank near the Sr. Citizens Apartments. He was a son of Theodocius and Jane (McLeod) Ford, He was married to Isalda Ellis daughter of Nathan and Margaret (Miles) Ellis, Their home was burned several years ago, it was on Forest St., next door to his brother Leander.

ZOETH FREEMAN 3RD......1839- 1879..He was son of Nathan(1803-1874) and Patty Sarah (Pride) (1807--1887),and he married in 1863 Zilpha Minard daughter of Dr.Levi and Grace (Watt) Minard. They farmed and lumbered until the call of so many friends to join them in the USA, had them making the move to the Worcester Mass area. Many of the descendants of this part of the family still exist there.

STEWART FREEMAN......1806-1891. He was the son of Samuel(1770-1834) and Rebecca (Harlow)(1769-1858) Freeman.  He married in 1831 Catherine Freeman (1809-1888) daughter of Robert and Catherine (Fraser) Freeman.

SNOW P. FREEMAN......1828-1900. He was son of Samuel (1795-1878)and Sophia (Ford) Freeman. Snow  married Alice Hurchinson (1833-1894), one of their sons was Fred R. Freeman. father of Edith , who married Thomas Raddall.

SAMUEL FREEMAN SR........1795-1878..Son of Samuel and Rebecca (Harlow) Freeman. His marriage in 1819 to Sophia Ford, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Cole) Ford provided five children; his second marriage to Mercy Knowles provided three more children. His home was that now identified as #384 High. 8, Milton. He was important in shipbuilding and lumbering, operating Sam'l Freeman & Sons.

ISAAC FREEMAN......1810-1878.. Son of Dennis (1766-1846) and Mercy (Gorham) (1764-1846) Freeman.  He married in 1836 Lucinda Kempton (1815-1874) daughter of Francis and Abigail (Millard) Kempton.. They had eight children.

JOHN T. FREEMAN......1841-1905..He was the son of Nathan(1807-....) and Hannah (Shaw) Freeman and grandson of Enoch and Rebecca (Gardner) Freeman.  He married Catherine Gilmore daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Brothers) Gilmore. They lived on "Moose Hill", Glenwood St., had four children, one daughter was married to William Ellsworth Murley and that family went to the USA.

EDWARD G. FREEMAN......1837-1905.. Son of Isaac (1810-1878) and Lucinda (Kempton) Freeman. He married (1) Harriet Neal (1833-1882) of Halifax and they had two children. He marr. (2)  the widow Parker, (Helen Telfer),and (3) in 1899 the widow Middlemas, (Jerusha Burke Dexter).

JOSEPH HALLET FREEMAN......1835-1906.. Son of Lewis and Elizabeth (Cole) Freeman,  and married Olivia M. Rumsey (1839- 1926) and they had one son Rev. Charles Rumsey Freeman b. 1870, d. 1933.

LEWIS FREEMAN......1807- 1894.. Son of Dennis (1766- 1846) and Mercy (Gorham) (1764- 1846) Freeman. He married in about 1833 Elizabeth Cole (1805-1883), daughter of Hallet and Hannah (Millard) Cole. They had  4children.

DENNIS FREEMAN......Jr. 1795- 1874..Son of Dennis (1766- 1846)and Mercy (Gorham) Freeman.. He married Jemima Freeman, daughter of Peleg and Hannah (Deane) Freeman. They had seven children.

STEPHEN SNOW FORD......His widow married Henry Harlow of SableRiver, NS. She was Annie Parsons (1839-1900).

NATHAN FREEMAN SR........1803-1874.. was the son of second generation settlers to this area. His father was Samuel, his mother Rebecca Harlow. Their home was that now occupied by George and Jean Turner in 1996, # 303 Highway 8 in Milton,NS. Samuel's father was Simeon. One of Nathan's sons was Ira Pride Freeman, named for his mother and Nathan's wife, Patty Sarah Pride.

IRA PRIDE FREEMAN......1838-1924..His ancestry goes back toSimeon one of thepropietors of this township and a builder of an early sawmill. His home was #303 Highway 8, Milton, NS., and that built on the wedge of land allocated to the first sawmill. Ira was a lumberman, and merchant, his store was located where today one finds an animal hospital Clinic. Later years Ira built a beautiful Victorian home next door, and occupied it during his lifetime. This home fell victim to fire in later years under new owners. He was married in 1864 to Mary Rebecca Harlow, a sister to John Henry Harlow, and children of Charles and Rebecca (McLeod) Harlow.

NATHAN R. FREEMAN......1842-1896..He was another son of Nathan Freeman Sr. he married the widow of James W. Zwicker, Adelaide (Oxner) Zwicker, she died in Lunenburg in 1912.

NATHAN FREEMAN 2ND.......1807-----There were two Nathan Freeman families inMilton during this period. He was son of Enoch and Rebecca Gardner Freeman. This one was married to Hannah Shaw.

NATHAN FREEMAN 3RD.......He was a son, the youngest son of Nathan and Hannah (Shaw) Freeman.

WILLIAM W. FREEMAN......He was the oldest son of Nathan and Hannah (Shaw) Freeman. He married in 1854 Miss Mary E. Coops, and he died in Somerville Mass in 1910.

JOHN FREEMAN......He was a son of Nathan and Hannah (Shaw) Freeman. He married Catherine Gilmore, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Brothers) Gilmore.  Their family was raised in the Eastern USA.

TUPPER FREEMAN......He was a son of Nathan and Hannah (Shaw)Freeman. He married in 1867 in Bristol, Liverpool, NS., Mary Ann Long, daughter of Capt.John and Mary (Firth) Long. They had a son Wm. A. Freeman,b.1868, d.1906 in Boston, Mass.

JAMES MORTON FORD......1811-1883.. James was a well established businessman in the 1850's , his place of business being at the location of Milton's PostOffice Building. His home was built in 1848, # 256 High. 8, and was ready when he married  Ann Sponagle.

ALONZO FORD......Alonzo was the son of Theodosius Ford 11, and his first wife Jane McLeod, ( of  six children). He married in 1864 Martha Roberts daughter of Smith F. andMartha S. (Freeman) Roberts.

JOSHUA N. FREEMAN......1838-1979...Son of Robert (1780-1821) and his second wife Gertrude (Heckman) Freeman.

ALLAN FORD......

EDWARD FORD......1807-1879.. Son of William and Abigail ( Murray) Ford. He was the builder of the house  at Salmon Island bridge, # 221 High.8,now owned in 1996 by Robert and Sandra Brown.

RUFUS C. FORD......1838-1930..He was the son of Edward and Aurin(Cole) Ford above,a woodsman,and a  forman on construction works. He worked first with his father lumbering at the Indian Gardens, an area of lands adjacent to the first lake feeding the Mersey River. He wasage 14 and starting his working life. He married in 1870 Eileen Clancy, they had a son Daniel, and two daughters, Mrs Wm. Thompson, Liverpool,NS., and Mrs Clifford Stoddard, Somerville, Mass. He was a Master Mason for over 60 years,Milton Lodge # 27, Prince of Wales. He served twice as worshipful master. He always voted Liberal, never deviating.

ANDREW HUSKINS......1827-1914..He was born in Summerville Center and learned the Millwright trade in his youth. There were many small sawmills and other mills on water courses or streams with dams and water wheels. He was a specialist in this craft of building and repairing waterwheels. It was while building such a wheel in Chelsea, in nearby Lunenburg Co., that he met his future wife Hannah Gilmore. they were married and lived in Milton, the house he built was Gothic , since demolished, location near # 450 High.8.

ABNER HARLOW.....1818-1899. He was the son of Abner Sr. and Polly(Slocomb)Harlow. He married in 1847 Susan Coops, daughter of John and Hannah (Murray)Coops.

WILLIAM HALL......1810-1885..

EDWARD KEMPTON......1810-1891.. He was son of Jacob Curtis (1772-1859) and Joanna (Crowell) (1777-1845) Kempton. He marr. in 1842 Mary Isabella Telfer. He was a senior member of E.Kempton & Co., Gen. Merchants. He was appointed deacon in the Baptist Church in 1852. He served as Milton's Postmaster from 1863 to his death in 1891. He was a partner in the building of the Schooner"Enterprise" which was sold to Augustus Knaut. His brother Augustus Kempton was a partner until his bad health and death.

SILVANUS MORTON......1805-1887..married in 1833 Ezelia Ford, and they had 10 children, the house was a large mansion on Morton St. towards the top of thehill. Silvanus was an enterprising person, many sawmills, many ships at sea, merchant trading at his wharf, and then he started his own bank. Everything was going rosy, when the markets dried up after the end of the Civil War, borrowed money was called in and a depression hit this area like recovery would not occur. Privatly owned land was lost to bidders in a sherriffs sale, large land owners took over, free enterprise did not respond. Silvanus lost all of his fortune. He died a broken man.

CHARLES E. MORTON......1833-1916.. married Selina Freeman and they had nine children. Silvanus' two sons Charles and John were very much apart of the Morton fortunes, rising and falling. Charles survived by enterprising effort, as did John.  They rescued part of their enterprises, and created new ones. Charles had built a beautiful home in Milton, this was later lost to fire.

JOHN G. MORTON......He was one of the sons of Sylvanus and Ezelia (Ford) Morton, and they created a large empire of Merchandisng, Sawmilling, Shipbuilding, and Banking between 1800 and 1870.  The depression that followed the Civil War in the USA, practically wiped them out, yet they did make some recovery. John G. married Georgina Stevens of Halifax, built a beautiful home on the banks of the Mersey River, that still stands in 1996. (147Highway #8). John kept a personal journal, this had been rescued by T.H.Raddall, edited somewhat, and forms part of his Killam Library notes. Q.C.Museum does have one copy and is available from the Curator.

FREDERICK MINARD......1810-1899..He was the son of John and Mehitable (Draper) Minard. His father ,John,had drowned in a boating accident in Liverpool Harbour in 1817. His mother remarried Abner Harlow, who became his step-father in his childhood. Frederick was a lumberman,and married Maria Cushing,together they built the home,  4 Potanoc St., Milton, NS.  This whole district was known as Frederickville, was a school district for years before the consolidation of schools in post WW 11 days.

JOHN MINARD JR. b.about 1840.. He was the eldest son of Frederick and Maria(Cushing) Minard, and just ready for his first chance to vote in the pending election. He had not married by this time . His brothers had not reached voting ages at this time.

JOHN MORLY......1822-1898..Always in Milton this family was known as Murley's, this John Murley was from Pleasant River, where he had married Bethana Smith.  Bethana had been born in Barrington, NS, had been working and living with Smith relatives in North Queens Co., NS, when she married John Murley. She was a grandaughter of Archaleus Smith, first settler of Barrington.  John's father was John Morely from Ireland, who marr. Elvira Martin in Port Medway, NS.,before pioneering the farm land in that north east corner of Queens Co., NS. There were ten children in this Murley family.

JOHN MINARD SR........about 1808.. His father was drowned in a boating accident near Coffins Island in Liverpool, NS, Bay in 1817 when he and his brothers and sisters were left fatherless until their mother remarried widower Abner Harlow, who proved to be a good father for them, they all became local business men in the local lumbering world. This John married Susan Cole and had a considerable family.

JOSEPH H. MINARD......b. abt. 1835/40..Joseph Howe Minard was another of Frederick and Maria (Cushing) Minards sons. The Joseph Minard's lived in the house now owned in 1996 by  Stephen and Ann MacDonald, 455 Highway #8, in Milton. This family was a lumbering industry fatality also in the bank losses of the mid 1870's, and they sold out and went to the USA.

JOHN MCPHERSON......b. abt 1838.. He was the son of John and Irene (McPherson)McPherson. His father had been a school teacher in various Queens Co., NS.,schools, but was best known even today as that of being a Poet. John, Sr., thefather was born in 1817, and died in 1845 from Consumption as T.B. was called in those days. Examples of his poetry can be found in the Queens County Museum, in Liverpool, NS.

SAMUEL MILES......1822-1883.. He was the son of Robert (1791-1879) and Lavinia (Coombs) (1795-1828) Miles. Samuel married in 1847 Angelina Parsons (1813 -1902).

ROBERT MILES......1791-1879..Robert was the son of John and Thankful (Freeman) (1768-1852) Miles. He married 1818 Lavinia Coombs, they had 6 children.

JOSEPH MILES.....married Matilda Slocombe, b. abt 183x, who married again after Joseph's death, David Dunlap of Sable River, and Matilda died in Mass. in 1913 at age 80. The Joseph Miles house was on the property just north of his father's, where now live Alice and Charles Zwicker.

WILLIAM MILES SR.......1812-1890....He married in 1864 Rosanna Olmstead of Liverpool, NS. He died in Worcester, Mass.

ALFRED MILES......1834-1907..He married Lydia Pentz (1840-1913)and they had considerable family all of which went elsewhere to make a living. The Alfred Miles home still exists in 1996, it is the home of Charles and Alice Zwicker.

ELKANAH MORTON......1820-1881..He was the son of James Jr.(1790-1855) and Phebe (Freeman) (1788-1831) Morton, James of Milton and Phebe from Liverpool, and early settlers in Middlefield, NS. Elkanah marr. Maria Freeman, dau. of Elisha (!786-) and Maria (Coville) Freeman, and they had eight children.

ALLAN MORTON......1837-.....He was the son of James Jr.(1790-1855) and  Mary (Drew) (Sponagle) (1802- 1872) Morton, the second marriage for each parent. Allan married Annie Blennus, Dr. Angus McDonald Morton of Halifax was their son.

JAMES N. NICKERSON.....1813-1880.  This family lived where Milton's Graveyard is today, the house was slightly above the main gateway, on Milford St. One of his daughters was Harriet, whose pen name was Harriet Cole, and a book of poems by this invalid exists. Evangelists of the period used one of her poems in a Hymn. Another sister in her older years was a care person for the family children at Freeman and Verta Tuppers, she was Hannah.

JOSEPH PARSONS......1825-1903.. Married in 1848 to Eunice Ford, 1828-1894, she died in Cambridgeport, Mass. She was the daughter of Joseph and Jane (Harlow) Ford. Their home was built on Forest St., later the home of Frank Ellis, now of R. Rhyno.

JOHN A. RITCHIE......1835-1875.. He was originally from Annapolis, and married in Milton to Harriet McDonald (1841-1898). They were active in the Milton Christian Church.

JAMES SHIELDS......1820-1895..came to this area in 1840 andbought the property and built the home at 244 Highway # 8, now the property in 1996 of Mrs Harold Arthur. He and two other brothers, Patrick and Daniel came from Glen, Donegal Co., Ireland. He married (1) Phebe Patterson, and their son was Frank. He married (2) Ruth Holmes of Hantsport and had four more children.

DANIEL SHIELDS......married (1) 1854, Margaret, daughter of William and Lucy Dean. She died in 1858. He marr. (2) Sarah Douglas dau. of Robert Douglas of Tatamougoche, Colchester Co.,NS.  He next moved to Boston.

JAMES PORTER SMITH......about 1840 and died after 1912.  He was the son of James and Hannah (Freeman) Smith, and in the late 1800's went to Dorchester Mass, as did so many local youth to find work. His parents at different periods while visiting there died. It was in 1912 that William Keddy bought the old home from James Smith  in Dorchester Mass.

JAMES SMITH......1808-1906. He married a grandaughter of Simeon Freemans, Hannah.  The Eastern side of Milton had been inhabited and houses had been built by different parts of these early Freemans, all descendants of Proprieter and Town Clerk Elisha Freeman. This James Smith bought the house, #393 High. #8, in 1854 from Edward H. Freeman for L 100 and raised a considerable family there. Most of that family went to the United States as so many did later in the century. Hannah was visiting her son in Dorchester Mass when she died in 1895. James was visiting his son in 1906 in Dorchester when he died there.

PARDON STARRATT......1808-1902.. He had recently moved from Paradise, in Annapolis Co.,NS., to work for Mortons in their shipyard. He was amaster carpenter. He married Letitia Mehlman, built a house now 165 Highway #8,(!996), and a considerable family resulted, including: Charles,Caroline,Nellie, Robert, all who went to the USA. Two other sons, Harry and Tom ended up in electrical work in Canada's west.

JAMES TAYLOR......1834-....He was originally from New Germany, son of Solomon and Sarah (Chute) Taylor. He was married in 1858 by the Rev.Samuel Taylor, to Mercy Gorham Freeman,(!838-1874) and they had five children. Mercy was buried at Barss Corner, Lunenburg Co., NS.

JAMES TOMSON......

CHARLES H. WHITMAN......1823-1906..Charles was the son of Jacob Whitman Jr.(1786-....) and Lydia (Tupper) (1789- 1855) Whitman. Lydia was the daughter of Nathan and Lydia (Freeman) Tupper. Charles marr. Eliza Baker Mack (1824-1911).  They moved to St John, NB., where they both died.They had four children, one child Enoch Whitman died in Milton in 1861 at age 7 or 8 yrs.

JOSEPH B. WYMAN......1826-1901..Joseph is thought to have come here from Maine, although some believe he was born in Yarmouth, NS. He and Al. Churchill set up machinery to finish lumber, and make mouldings, etc. for the booming shipbuilding trade. Their factory was on the Kyack Brook, near the 1996 location of the swimming pool. The partnership was dissolved and Wyman carried on as a building contractor and with the factory. He married Martha Freeman(1835-1918) dau. of Zoeth and Dorinda Freeman. His factory burned, and he carried on with carpenter work from his workshop at his home,located  and still standing in 1996, 334 Highway #8. He also was the undertaker and coffin maker in later years.
